Van doesn't defrost/defog - does this have anything to do with it:?

my van doesn't defrost or defog ever since this one mechanism broke. One day i started my van and i heard this CLICKING sound from directly under my glove box. i decided to look into it and discovered there was a device with an arm with a pin sticking out of it opening a flap. the pin on the arm had STRIPPED out the hole top open the flap so when it went to open the flap it would move into and out of the hole causing the clicking noise- i decided to just take the part off because my dad ( who knows a lot about cars) didn't know what it was at first. now that winter is here i notice that my defrost and defog options SUCK and dont like to work along with my fresh air circulate on no longer works- what happened and how can i fix it? this is all on a plymouth voyager 1997
