Why have Conservatives historically voted against their own self interests?

Could it be from low self esteem or low intellect? Why would a group of people vote against something that helps them out? Take Health care for example...why would they fear it and vote against it when it would help them. Figures show the ones who are now getting the most out of these type of social programs are the Red states. Why would they be against something that helps them?
